What Are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges are a type of dental restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth. They are typically made up of two parts: Crowns that go over your natural teeth or dental implants, and the bridge itself, made up of artificial teeth that bridge the gap between the crowns.

Benefits Of Dental Bridges

There are several benefits to dental bridges as a restorative dental treatment. With a dental bridge, you can:

  • Restore the look of your smile; the bridges look and feel natural.

  • Restore your speech.

  • Make it easier to chew and eat food.

  • Prevent orthodontic problems caused by teeth shifting to fill in the gap left by missing teeth.

Dental bridges are also easy to care for; the process for caring for bridges is almost exactly the same as the process for caring for your natural teeth. Compared to some other restorative dental treatments, like implants to replace all of your missing teeth, the initial costs of dental bridges may be more affordable.

Who Is A Good Candidate For A Dental Bridge?

Patients who are missing one or more teeth, with two stable and healthy teeth to either side of the gap are typically the best candidates for dental bridges. Alternatively, patients with relatively good jawbone health may be good candidates for implant-supported dental bridges.

Patients who opt for dental bridges should be willing to follow a consistent oral health care routine: Brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and cleaning underneath their bridges. They should also avoid hard and chewy foods.

Functional & Aesthetic Benefits

Patients should consider getting dental implants if they want to restore the look of their smile. The functional benefits of dental implants are just as important; they help patients eat the foods they love, speak with more clarity, and reduce the risk of oral health problems.

No matter what kind of restorative technique you use, it is important to replace missing teeth to preserve your health and your lifestyle.  Dental bridges are one of many options; talk with our dentists to learn which option is right for you.

Types Of Dental Bridges Offered At Shine Dental

Traditional Fixed Bridges

Traditional fixed bridges use healthy, natural teeth as anchors. Those natural teeth are filed down, and crowns are placed over them to support the bridge. They are a type of permanent bridge (like implant-supported bridges); this means that they cannot be removed except by your dentist.

Implant-Supported Bridges

Implant-supported bridges are similar to traditional fixed bridges, but they use implants instead of natural teeth. This means that your dentist will affix titanium posts, which will be used as anchors for your bridge. An implant-supported bridge works best when implants are used on both sides. Like fixed bridges, they are a permanent bridge. Implant bridges are used when you have multiple missing teeth in a row, since long-span, tooth-borne bridges are not as stable or predictable as implant-supported bridges.

What To Expect During The Dental Bridge Procedure

The first step is a thorough examination and assessment of your oral health and treatment goals. At Shine Dental, we want our treatments to reflect the unique needs of each and every one of our patients. Bridges may not be right for you; implants, dentures, or other restorative treatments may be a better option.

When dental bridges are the right choice for you, the procedure takes place over two visits for traditional bridges. First, a local anesthetic is applied to ensure your comfort during the procedure.  Enamel is then removed from your anchor teeth to make room for the crown. From there, impressions are taken; those impressions are used to fabricate the final bridge. A temporary bridge is placed on your teeth while the final bridge is being fabricated.

On the second visit, your temporary bridge will be removed, and the new, permanent bridge is placed on your anchor teeth. Your dentist will use dental cement to bond the dental bridge into place; once bonded, it will typically last anywhere from 10 to 15 years.

Dental Bridge FAQs

Are dental bridges covered by insurance?

Dental bridges may be covered by insurance; it depends on your insurance plan. We can run an insurance check on your behalf before your procedure. Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) members should know that dental bridges may not be currently covered by CDCP.

Do dental bridges feel natural?

Dental bridges look and feel like natural teeth; they also restore the natural look of your smile. You can chew on most foods with dental bridges; just avoid very hard foods (like ice or jawbreakers) and chewy items like sticky candy!

How much does a dental bridge cost in Winnipeg?

On average, a 3-unit dental bridge in Winnipeg will range from $2,500 - $3,500 for a traditional bridge. The cost will, however, vary depending on how many teeth you are replacing and how many units the bridge will be.
