What Is Cosmetic Dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry is a branch of dentistry that focuses on improving the look of your smile. The techniques used in cosmetic dentistry can change the colour and shape of your teeth, gums, and smile.
Other branches of dentistry, including teeth cleaning and orthodontics, can also improve the look of your smile—the main difference between them is that the focus of cosmetic dentistry is on aesthetics, instead of improving your oral health. All our cosmetic dentistry services are safe, and some of them can actually improve your oral health!
Benefits Of Cosmetic Dental Care
There are several benefits to cosmetic dentistry. Our procedures can:
Help your smile shine brighter
Boost your self-confidence
Improve your oral health by making your oral healthcare routine easier
Fix old, outdated crowns and dental work
Give you long-lasting results that will improve the look of your smile for years—or permanently!
Who Is A Good Candidate For Cosmetic Dentistry?
Patients with good oral health care routines who can commit to regular dentist visits and follow-ups for their cosmetic procedures are the best candidates for cosmetic dentistry. Some cosmetic procedures require patients to adjust their oral health care routines; patients should be ready to make these adjustments before starting treatment.
Our Cosmetic Dental Services
Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are thin porcelain shells that are attached to the front of your teeth to correct common cosmetic concerns, including discolouration, chips, gaps, and crooked or uneven teeth. Our porcelain veneers can even make oral health care easier because they provide an even surface for chewing and cleaning.
Composite Fillings
Composite fillings are used to repair cavities, fractures, and chips; fillings are a restorative dental technique, but composite fillings are also considered cosmetic because they match the look of your natural teeth (unlike metal fillings). In some instances, Composite Veneers are a great option for restoring teeth as well!
Teeth Whitening
Our in-office teeth whitening techniques can take years of staining off your teeth in an hour or less. We customize your whitening treatment based on your needs, goals, and oral health, using high-quality whitening gels and proven strategies for mitigating tooth sensitivity after whitening. Our techniques can help your teeth look whiter and brighter for years so you can let your smile shine!
Porcelain Crowns
Porcelain crowns are an essential part of restorative dentistry; they fit over natural teeth, allowing dentists to restore them when they are damaged or decayed. As part of our cosmetic dentistry services, we can replace old, metal crowns with high-quality porcelain crowns designed to withstand heavy bite forces.
Onlays
Onlays are a restorative dental technique that is used when a tooth is too damaged for a filling, but not damaged enough that a crown is necessary. Unlike traditional metal onlays, our colour-matched onlays can be used for cosmetic purposes, replacing old silver or gold onlays to match the colour of your natural teeth.
Gum Contouring
Gum contouring reshapes your gumline while removing excess gum tissue. Your gums are an essential part of the look of your smile; just as a beautiful painting can be elevated with proper framing, you can radically transform the look of your smile with gum contouring.
Smile Makeover Options
At Shine Dental, we take a holistic, conservative approach to cosmetic dentistry. This means that:
We look at your whole smile, including your teeth and gums, your oral health, and your oral healthcare routine, before recommending a treatment plan.
We use as few techniques as possible to give you the smile you want.
You might get all of the results you want with nothing more than a teeth whitening procedure. You might need dental veneers and minor gum contouring to get your dream smile. We’ll work with you to determine which cosmetic treatments you need, then design a complete smile makeover from the ground up.
You deserve to let your smile shine. We can help. For cosmetic dentistry in Winnipeg, choose Shine Dental!
Common Questions About Cosmetic Dentistry
-
Every cosmetic dental treatment lasts for a different amount of time. Porcelain veneers and porcelain crowns typically last for 10-15 years, while onlays can last for 20-30 years. Composite fillings often last for 5-10 years. Teeth whitening will typically last for 1-3 years.
These numbers vary so much because a patient’s diet, oral health, and oral health care will differ; taking good care of your teeth will make all of these treatments last longer. Before and after treatment, we will give you advice on how to best care for your cosmetic dental treatments.
-
The cost of cosmetic dentistry varies depending on the cosmetic procedure. At Shine, we offer teeth whitening for life with a one-time fee of $199; all you need to do is visit us for preventative dental care every six months. That’s a great deal, because the vast majority of our patients should visit for preventive care every six months anyway! Veneers, fillings, crowns, onlays, and contouring all differ in pricing depending on the teeth being treated. When you visit us for a cosmetic consultation, we can give you a detailed breakdown of the cost of a total smile makeover!
-
Most insurance plans do not cover most cosmetic procedures, as cosmetic dentistry is not considered essential for oral health. Some restorative procedures that are also cosmetic may be covered; if you have an old metal crown that needs to be replaced anyway, your insurance policy may cover replacing it with a colour-matched porcelain crown.
Not sure if a cosmetic procedure will be covered by your insurance plan? We’re here to help. You can give our team your insurance information, and we’ll let you know if your procedures can be covered and how much your plan will cover!
-
Your teeth and gums should not hurt during cosmetic dental procedures; we use local anesthetics when necessary to eliminate pain. Some mild discomfort is common after cosmetic dental procedures; this discomfort usually subsides after a few days, and over-the-counter painkillers like acetaminophen can help reduce or eliminate the discomfort. Our team will give you instructions for care after treatments to reduce discomfort!
